ACA Canyon Rating – 2A II
NEVER ENTER ANY SLOT CANYON WHEN HEAVY RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST…!!!
My friend Drew stands at the back of the upper portion of Chavez Slot Canyon… that… very few people climb up to…
This is the entrance to the upper slot canyon, reached by hiking up the right-hand, or main fork of Chavez Canyon above the first slot canyon. Very few people continue climbing up around the first slot canyon, to see the upper “better” slot canyon above
name- Chavez Canyon
depth of slot portion- about 70’
length of slot canyon portion- about a quarter-mile
elevation- 6900’ at the top down to 6700’ at the bottom
GPS coordinates- ±36°22.539’N 106°40.007’W
season to visit- drier months of the year, like May, June, September, October and November… NEVER ENTER ANY SLOT CANYON WHEN HEAVY RAIN IS IN THE FORCAST…!!!
accommodations- Chama River Campground is nearby…
ownership- Santa Fe National Forest
access- is from Forest Road #151, near the monastery… see the map below
nearest town- Abiquiu is about 25 miles east of here
fun fact- most people do NOT climb up around the first slot canyon to see the “better” upper slot canyon, shown in both photos above
Chavez Canyon up forest road 151, near the monastery, is known as a small slot canyon… but… this is mostly because very few people continue up Chavez Canyon above the first slot canyon… to the upper slot canyon above. This upper Chavez Canyon “slot” is better than the first slot canyon you come to... and it is shown in the photos above, as well as on the map below… along with the dotted-lines on the map, showing how to find your way up to it.
