My friend Drew stands at the back of the upper portion of Chavez Slot Canyon… that… very few people climb up to…

This is the entrance to the upper slot canyon, reached by hiking up the right-hand, or main fork of Chavez Canyon above the first slot canyon.  Very few people continue climbing up around the first slot canyon, to see the upper “better” slot canyon above

length of slot canyon portion- about a quarter-mile

elevation- 6900’ at the top down to 6700’ at the bottom

fun fact- most people do NOT climb up around the first slot canyon to see the “better”  upper slot canyon, shown in both photos above

Chavez Canyon up forest road 151, near the monastery, is known as a small slot canyon… but… this is mostly because very few people continue up Chavez Canyon above the first slot canyon… to the upper slot canyon above.  This upper Chavez Canyon “slot” is better than the first slot canyon you come to... and it is shown in the photos above, as well as on the map below… along with the dotted-lines on the map, showing how to find your way up to it.
