season- May and early June is best, but good thru October.
ownership- Santa Fe National Forest – San Pedro Parks Wilderness Area
access- is described below
nearest town- Cuba, NM is about 5 miles southwest of here
Northwest of Cuba, NM is a community called La Jara. Camino Olivas is the road above La Jara that accesses La Jara Canyon. La Jara Canyon has a somewhat hard to follow horse trail that traverses up the entire canyon and ties in with Forest Service Trails on top. At about 9400’ a green open meadow serves as a hunting camp. This is a good place to turn south off-trail and climb over the mountain to La Madera Creek. Returning to your vehicle down La Madera Canyon will walk you right by this waterfall.
Santa Fe National Forest has a nice topo map called: San Pedro Parks wilderness. This is an okay map but the USGS 7.5 minute topo map for this area are better. Sorry I have provided no map for this page.
